-Someone fixed my window and the lock on my door. It is now possible to be warm, and to avoid the carpal tunnel syndrome that would inevitably result from spending 3 minutes trying to turn the lock every time I leave the room or go to bed.
-I now have broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, bell peppers, sweet peppers, grapefruits, clementines, plums, nectarines, bananas, and cherries. In addition to tikka masala sauce, Irish cream, free-range pork sausage, Brie, and a Toblerone cupcake. All for about thirty dollars. Admit it, you wish you had a farmer's market that good.
-I might be able to trade rooms, and then I will be living across the hall from Lori, and several other girls will be nearby as well. Yay!
In other news:
It's very interesting being an American in classes that talk a lot about British-ness. In my linguistics class we always talk a lot about the British language, and in my nationalism class today we talked about the idea of British-ness in general. This meant that I gave the...well, not exactly wrong...but certainly less common definition of "goalless" in linguistics (apparently it's a football/soccer term - you know, my best area of expertise) and felt a bit lost talking about a sense of English identity/nationalism. I would never think about these things at CU. If I took a linguistics class, I probably wouldn't spend much time thinking about British English. So I guess it works the other way around too. I am really curious what the "American Studies" classes are like. It seems like such a strange name. "American Studies." Yet I've never been bothered by the Center for British & Irish Studies at CU. I haven't had any big "culture shock" moments here, it is just these little things everywhere that are all just the tiniest bit different and awkward. That, and I always have issues opening doors. They always open the opposite direction from what I expect.
Also, I joined hiking club today! They have trips to the Lake District and Scotland EVERY WEEKEND! Many more photos to come.
Okay, time to clean up and convince Adam to switch rooms.
Much love,
Julia
