I have encountered a saddening problem. So far, I have not met anyone as nerdy as I am. Most of the people I have met are very sociable and enjoy going to clubs and drinking and I...don't. I enjoy having tea and talking, preferably about nerdy subjects such as why books are amazing, why capitalism is evil, and why everyone should read xkcd. For me this is not a dull, snobby activity, but rip-roaringly fun. (Yes, I just said rip-roaringly.) Not only have I not met anyone who enjoys this sort of tea-drinking-and-talking activity, but I've been deprived of talking to my nerdy friends at home because I haven't had internet access. I was feeling rather depressed about this last night.
This doesn't mean that the people I've met aren't great. I have met a ton of international students and a few people who live in my building and they are all really nice and fun to hang out with. I just need other types of social sustenance as well.
I registered for all of my classes and I was hoping that they would all be on Tuesday and Thursday...but then it turns out that classes I thought were on Tuesday and Thursday also have other pesky meeting times on Fridays and such...and this is no good. I am at least done with class at 11 on Fridays so I can still head out for the weekend and not need to be back until Tuesday morning. :-) I am taking Literary Theory, an English class having something to do with Queen Elizabeth and the body (which is apparently some kind of literary term, in addition to its "corpse," "hott supple bod," etc. connotations), a linguistics class on the history of the English language, and a creative writing class on "longer fiction." I also signed up for a history class about nationalism/national identities in the hopes that it would not meet on Fridays. But guess what. It did. And by the time I found out, they'd already signed my registration form. Anyway, I will be able to drop 1 class so as not to be loaded down with 21 credits. (Yes, 21.)
It is still light out and I have a lot to do so I am going to head out and I will put up photos later tonight (think of that as "this afternoon" your time).
Much love,
Julia
